Workshops

Workshops offer an opportunity to intensify every aspect of meditation practice. They generally include periods of sitting and walking meditation practice, Dharma talks, and question and answer periods. They are designed for people relatively new to Vipassana as well as people with extensive experience. Everyone is welcome. Please bring a vegetarian bag lunch or plan to go out to eat in the neighborhood.

If you are a beginning student, please see the section, Getting Started which includes Beginners Workshops.

The Guidelines for Participation provides additional information about participating at CIMC. See the Recommended Reading list for readings on insight meditation.

We accept registrations by mail or in person.

Wise Speech: An Ongoing Investigation
Led by Narayan Liebenson Grady

In the Buddha's teachings of the Noble Eightfold Path, wise speech is considered an essential aspect of Vipassana practice. In this workshop, we will explore ways in which speech and communication become vehicles for developing awareness and insight instead of fostering pain and misunderstanding. This is part of an ongoing series of workshops on this subject; participation in previous Wise Speech workshops is not required.

Learning How to Live, Learning How to Die: The Approach of Vipassana Meditation
Led by Larry Rosenberg

The Buddha encouraged the frequent contemplation of aging, sickness and death. Such meditation, concerned with intimate understanding of the great matter of life and death, can help us face and master our fears. It can also help us more fully appreciate the preciousness of a life inspired and guided by Dharma practice.

Illness and the Dharma
Led by Reya Stevens
A sick person was one of the "heavenly messengers" that prompted the Buddha's search for freedom. Yet today, many of us with chronic and life-threatening illnesses find applying the Buddha’s teachings to our own experiences challenging. In this workshop, we will explore pragmatic perspectives on dharma and illness through talks, meditations and discussion, investigating possibilities for peace even in the midst of suffering that is inherently associated with serious health problems. This workshop is geared to anyone with chronic or life-threatening illness, or disability. Caregivers, loved ones and professionals in the field are also welcome to attend. Please make a special effort to use unscented products (including shampoo, lotion, etc.) so that our chemically-sensitive friends can attend.

Useful Information for Workshops

Before You Arrive

  • Remember to pre-register. Please do not assume there will be space available at the last minute.
  • Please help protect workshop participants with chemical sensitivies by avoiding scented products such as lotions, perfumes, after-shave, and hair products when getting ready to come to the workshop.
  • Comfortable clothing is recommended. Because the temperature of the hall can vary throughout the day, dressing in layers is also a good idea.
  • There is no need to bring your own cushion. Zafus (round cushions), meditation benches, zabutons (large mats), and chairs are available at the Center.
  • Remember to bring a bag lunch or plan to go out for lunch in the neighborhood. The CIMC kitchen will be available to workshop participants during the lunch break. This includes space in the refrigerator, and access to a microwave and toaster oven.
When You Arrive
  • Please plan to arrive on time. Allow an extra 10 or 20 minutes to check in, put your bag lunch in the kitchen, and settle into the Hall.
  • Workshops are generally held in the upper Meditation Hall which can be reached by a wheelchair accessible elevator. Contact the office if you need the wheelchair accessible side entrance to be open on weekends.
  • Shoes should be left in the shoe rack and coats in the first floor closet.
  • Please bring your valuables with you into the Meditation Hall.
  • Do not bring water bottles or food of any kind into the Meditation Hall.
  • Cell phones, pagers, beeper watches, etc should be turned off at all times in the Center.
  • After the workshop, please brush off your zabuton (large mat) and plump up your zafu (round cushion). Return any other items (i.e. benches, blankets) to their respective storage spaces so that you leave the hall as you found it.
