Workshops

Workshops offer an opportunity to intensify every aspect of meditation practice. They generally include periods of sitting and walking meditation practice, Dharma talks, and question and answer periods. They are designed for people relatively new to Vipassana as well as people with extensive experience. Everyone is welcome. Please bring a vegetarian bag lunch or plan to go out to eat in the neighborhood.

If you are a beginning student, please see the section, Getting Started which includes Beginners Workshops.

The Guidelines for Participation provides additional information about participating at CIMC. See the Recommended Reading list for readings on insight meditation.

We accept registrations online, by mail or in person.

Letting Go of Fear
Led by Michael Liebenson Grady

This workshop will focus on various meditation practices and their application to those times when fear arises in everyday life. By developing a capacity to meet fear with inner balance and an open heart, we can discover the wisdom and inner freedom that comes from not being ruled by fear. This is part of an ongoing series of workshops on the subject of fear; participation in previous workshops is not required.

The Eight Worldly Winds
Led by: Narayan Liebenson Grady

The Buddha described the ways we are pushed around by the conditions in life as the Eight Worldly Winds. These “winds” include praise and blame, success and failure, pleasure and pain, and fame and disrepute. The cultivation of equanimity makes it possible to respond to these experiences with greater wisdom and compassion. In this workshop we will work with each set of conditions. Talks, meditation practice and discussion will be included.

Inner Strength in an Uncertain World: The Approach of Vipassana Meditation
Led by Larry Rosenberg

The challenges arising from ongoing threats like unemployment, terrorist attacks, illness and death face us all. Fear, anger, and the anguish of living in an uncertain world are often aroused. We are not helpless. The Buddha’s teaching of the five balas, (powers) is an invaluable resource that can help us remain calm and clear. We can learn to take care of ourselves while acting in ways that are beneficial for others.

Requirements: Open to those who have been practicing Vipassana for at least one year, meditate on a daily basis and have some retreat experience.

Useful Information for Workshops

Before You Arrive

  • Remember to pre-register. Please do not assume there will be space available at the last minute.
  • Please help protect workshop participants with chemical sensitivies by avoiding scented products such as lotions, perfumes, after-shave, and hair products when getting ready to come to the workshop.
  • Comfortable clothing is recommended. Because the temperature of the hall can vary throughout the day, dressing in layers is also a good idea.
  • There is no need to bring your own cushion. Zafus (round cushions), meditation benches, zabutons (large mats), and chairs are available at the Center.
  • Remember to bring a bag lunch or plan to go out for lunch in the neighborhood. The CIMC kitchen will be available to workshop participants during the lunch break. This includes space in the refrigerator, and access to a microwave and toaster oven.
When You Arrive
  • Please plan to arrive on time. Allow an extra 10 or 20 minutes to check in, put your bag lunch in the kitchen, and settle into the Hall.
  • Workshops are generally held in the upper Meditation Hall which can be reached by a wheelchair accessible elevator. Contact the office if you need the wheelchair accessible side entrance to be open on weekends.
  • Shoes should be left in the shoe rack and coats in the first floor closet.
  • Please bring your valuables with you into the Meditation Hall.
  • Do not bring water bottles or food of any kind into the Meditation Hall.
  • Cell phones, pagers, beeper watches, etc should be turned off at all times in the Center.
  • After the workshop, please brush off your zabuton (large mat) and plump up your zafu (round cushion). Return any other items (i.e. benches, blankets) to their respective storage spaces so that you leave the hall as you found it.
