Taking the Refuges and Precepts
Taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and accepting the Five Precepts as ethical guides for our everyday actions can help provide a strong foundation for meditative living. The Refuges and Precepts will be described, followed by a ceremony in which you may accept the Dharma principles if you wish. Those who have taken the Refuges and Precepts may renew them at this time.

Useful Information for Wednesday Evening Programs

We want CIMC to be a welcoming, peaceful, meditative environment. To help preserve a culture of mindfulness, we ask that attention be brought to the following points:

  • Please do not bring water bottles or food of any kind into the meditation halls.
  • Turn off cell phones, pagers, beeper watches, etc when in the Center.
  • Leave shoes and coats in the first floor hallway; however bring your valuables with you into the meditation hall.
Mindful Housecleaning
Preceding the evening sitting and talk, there is a community house-cleaning led by one of the house residents. This weekly work period provides an opportunity to make a direct contribution to the upkeep of the Center, to practice mindfulness in action, and to make new friends. CIMC depends on volunteers to keep the Center clean and inviting. Please help if you can. All are welcome!

Wheelchair Accessibility
Wednesday evening Dharma talks are generally held in the upper meditation hall which can be reached by a wheelchair accessible elevator. Contact the office if you need the wheelchair accessible side entrance to be open.

Arriving on time for the sitting
The doors are generally open during the Mindful Housework period and are locked during the Daily Sitting. No one will be admitted into the sitting after it has begun.

Arriving on time for the Dharma Talk and/or Discussion
The doors will re-open after the Daily Sitting for the talk and/or discussion. Please arrive on time for the talk and enter quietly to help maintain a mindful atmosphere. There will be an opportunity to quietly leave at the end of the talk before the discussion begins.

Meditative silence
Please maintain silence in the meditation hall until the full program is finished. After the discussion, everyone is invited to stay for tea and socializing in the dining room.

Departure at the end of the evening
Please brush off your zabuton (large mat) and plump up your zafu (round cushion). Also, return any other items (i.e. benches, blankets) to their respective storage spaces so that you leave the hall as you found it.
